EMPLOYMENT LAW YEAR REVIEW 2024

The Nigerian labour and employment law landscape in 2024 was shaped by a dynamic interplay between legislative reforms, judicial decisions, and the application of global labour standards. Following the economic reforms by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration in 2023, we witnessed a spike in disputes on the welfare of workers, leading to the enactment of a new National Minimum Wage Act 2024 (“NMWA 2024”), various strike actions by trade unions among others. We also saw the Supreme Court of Nigeria weighing in (for the first time) on the effect of theprevailing jurisprudence of international labour standards on termination of employment.We present our highlight of these significant developments in 2024 and our forecast for 2025.
